Surprise!!!!

Today, I am all about surprises. Yesterday, my husband and I threw our eldest daughter a surprise bridal shower and, even though there were slip-ups, i.e. text messages not meant for her sent in a group family text, I think we pulled it off. She had a fabulous day and she seemed, genuinely, surprised.

For me, planning the party was more fun than I expected. I really enjoyed planning a party for someone else. I loved figuring out what restaurant she would most like to have her party, as well as planning a menu for her.  Apparently, the new trend for bridal showers is that the bride wears a short white dress to the shower. She knew we were planning a bridal shower but did not know when it would be. So, I told  her to buy her dress and shoes and give them to me  by September 1 and I brought them to the shower for her to change into.

My bridal shower was also a surprise hosted by my mother and sister.  The only suspicions I had occurred the evening before. The weather forecasters were predicting snow for the day of my surprise shower.  I remember being confused as to why my now ex-husband was so concerned about the possibility that we might not be able to get to my parents’ house the next day (let’s just say they weren’t fans of one another).  When the weather was sunny and nice the day of my shower, I put those suspicions aside and wore an old pair of overalls to my parents’ house. Back then, the host of the shower did not bring clothes for the bride to change into. So, there are numerous pictures of my friends and family in beautiful dresses and pants outfits at my bridal shower and I am wearing my old overalls.

Have you ever hosted or had a surprise party in your honor? What was your experience?

My wife threw one for my 50th Birthday. I thought we planned to go out for dinner, but never thought she would plan something at home. The only give away that something was up was when I got home, the garage door was open (summer time) and we would never do that if going out. So I pull up to the house and my son greets me at the door and walks me inside. Everyone was in my family room for the surprise. Even my boss came by and he was in on it trying to delay me at work with an extra meeting to give them extra time to prepare. Fantastic and the most memorable birthday. My friend had everyone park on the next street so there was no evidence anyone was there. They planned this for weeks, storing items out of site and coordinating food, balloons, etc. Today is her birthday, but noting so extravagant planned. Still we always try to surprise each other with something every year.

Slipping and ruining the surprise is sometimes a problem.

I made a surprise birthday part for Mara before we got married. It was in an intimate restaurant. Every 20 minutes I had a different musician or singer come in and sing or play her favorite song to her. It was quite lovely.

My husband put a text message about an RSVP in our family group text that included Danielle. While we couldn't delete it, my other kids put other comments about it that threw her off about the date.

I have hosted several that went off without a hitch. No one has ever thought to throw me one.

My wife surprised me with a trip to Venice, Florence, and Rome. Even when I saw the plane tickets, I said "There is a Rome New York??" Extraordinary surprise.
