A Tragic Repeat Conversation

There are just no words this morning for the tragedy that unfolded in Las Vegas as thousands of people enjoyed an outdoor concert.

With the horror, we again hear countless stories of heroism and selflessness, people who put their lives in danger to help save others. As always, first responders jumped in to care for our people in need. To me, that is how I want to think about our country.

I feel terribly helpless today. What can we do to help to heal these awful wounds? This is just senseless violence.

But as a family, we have power. At a minimum, I ask all of our Gotham family to take a moment today to think about the victims of this horrible act and their family and friends.

I think Tom Brokaw said it best, "As a nation we need to have a conversation."

After a prior instance of angry violence, Tom Petty wrote these lyrics to "Peace in LA" and donated all proceeds to charities helping victims. What a tribute to Petty and lives lost it would be for today's artists to put their talents and connections to work helping those affected by this and other instances of violence. Good people cannot always prevent evil acts, but "Imagine all the people" responding to each such act with tangible acts of giving and togetherness rather than bitterness or politicization.

"Peace in L.A." by Tom Petty

We need peace in L.A.
What happened was wrong
We all feel betrayed
But we got to be strong

If the power that be
Let evil go free
You must understand
Don't play into their hand

Don't need beating and shooting
Don't need burning and looting
Tonight we all pray
That our children are safe

There's hurt and frustration
There's a hard realization
But how can we help
If we steal from ourselves?

We need peace in L.A.
Daniel Schwartz

RIP Tom Petty.
We all need re-set and figure out what we can do as a United Nation.
