In honor of Earth day today, I thought I might share some interesting facts:

• First celebrated in 1970, Earth Day is now is observed in over 190 countries.

• In 1969, peace activist John McConnell proposed a day to honor the Earth and the concept of peace, to be celebrated on March 21, 1970, the first day of spring in the northern hemisphere.

• A month later a separate Earth Day was founded by United States Senator Gaylord Nelson as an environmental teach-in. It was first held on April 22, 1970.

• Nelson chose the date in order to maximize participation on college campuses and the week of April 19–25 was the best bet as it did not fall during exams or spring breaks.

• On Earth Day 2016, the landmark Paris Agreement was signed by the United States, China, and some 120 other countries.

You can get more info here www.earthday.org. I hope that our politicians recongnize how critical it is, especially now, to take care of the planet we call home.

Our GOtham Green Group gives its annual Gotham Green Awards on or about Earth Day.

The better care we take of ourselves, the healthier our one planet will be. We have nowhere else. I remember 1970 well...

You had me until the "especially now " part . As long as we make this political it's a losing argument . Earth Day and Mother Earth starts with the individual and morphs into a collective group think . No partisan politics should enter in to the equation . This is OUR PLANET . It doesn't belong to the Left or the Right . With all due respect Mitch leave the political bias out of it .

No politics Neil...no partisan bias...just a hope that the people who are in charge (Democrat and/or Republican) of the laws that can help or hurt the earth understand that. Especially with the accelerated pace of climate change we are experiencing now.
Neil Hollander

Hi Mitch . I believe climate change is real and natural but what I don't believe is the fake news surrounding it and the Al Gors'sof the planet Accelerated ? Not sure on that . There doesn't seem to be a an adequate baseline to work with . .
