The Beard

Throughout history there have been periods when facial hair was in, and times when it was out. More recently, in the late 19th century, long beards were the thing. Then the beards were shaved and during the turn of the century a mustache was the fad. Now it seems that a one week growth is popular among some. I have my own cycles. Typically come November the beard starts. By March or April it is gone. I like looking at a new face in the mirror every so often. For a long ski trip, such as the one I just returned from, a beard is essential. Especially when I go with my sons who sport their own beards. Together we are quite multicolored with tones of brown, grey and red. (Guess who is the grey.). It keeps us warm, has a rugged look, and makes for a good picture after a face plant and is full of snow and ice. It seems people have strong opinions on this subject. My mother never liked my beard; she said it hid my cute face. That is a mother for you. I guess I should defer to those who have to look at it. But I will keep it. Just for a little while longer.

Three years ago I went year round. Nonetheless I constantly hear "you're growing your beard". My parents hated it, but Jo prefers it. You look far far better hirsute!

There may be times I avoid a shave if I have no appointments planned or the weekends doings permit but I permanently gave up the beard in my first year of laws school when my former boss spoke on campus shortly after becoming Lt Gov. and greeted me as Corey Bear. The 'stache got lost after I met Shelly. If you see pics of me circa '82-83 with and '84-85 without most will vote for the clean shaven me.
Facial hair does not make me look bad but sans it works better.
My recommendation remains simple: go with what you like (with input from the relevant "partner")

My twenty-year-old son is sporting a rather scruffy beard these days, but his girlfriend likes it so I guess I have no say whatsoever. Driving him back up to Boston for his junior spring semester on Wednesday.
