Stand Up!

On my work from home days, I try very hard to tell myself to stand up, take a walk, get outside – even for just a few minutes.

Yet these days, I am failing.  Just too busy, which is not a complaint but sometimes an interference.

Any tips out there Gotham friends?  How do you make sure that you take a healthful break during the day?

Lunch time is my get outside and see what's happening. I pick up the mail, feed the fish out back and get some fresh air in the process. It really helps clear my mind.

I tell my clients to add regular breaks to their schedule - calendar them - and it works for most of them. I bought a small treadmill recently and use it 15 minutes at a time and also space out regular chores (dishes, straightening, getting the mail, watering plants, etc.) so that I spend at least a little time away from the computer.

Early Holiday Gift Idea: Apple Watch
The Apple Watch, for example, encourages us to stand by delivering a notification if you have been sitting for the first 50 minutes of an hour.

Walking in cities is easier than suburbs, which was why I missed Manhattan and am now much happier to be out of the 'burbs and living in New Haven.

I volunteer at a local Library two to three times a week (within walking distance and containing 3 flights of stairs); I visit a friend's mother once a week (102 years old!) and purposefully take a meandering route each time; and try to remember water or tea breaks every few hours.

I have a friend whose phone Quacks when her ducks need to be fed. Similar idea, eh? (Yes, real live ducks who lay eggs in the yard)
