Two Leashes

We were sitting on the back deck of the ferry from Orient Point to New London. As we approached New London, a man came over and extended two leashes to me.
“Will you hold these for me?”
As I reflexively extended my hand, I realized that there was a dog at the end of each leash.
“Only if you promise to come back!” I said.
The leather Louis Vuitton leashes suggested that he would be back.
With the two King Charles Spaniels safely in my control, he went up to the next deck and picked up a Pit Bull who, we learned, had bad hind legs and was afraid of stairs. And so, the Pit Bull was carried down to be reunited with his smaller siblings.
After a photo op, I returned the leashes and the dogs walked to the elevator for the ride to the car deck.
I wonder what would have happened if he hadn’t returned?

Again, you are a better man than me!

Grasping the extended hand, we don't always know what we are getting. Here it seems like love for our pets.
