How often do you rely on online reviews when making choices?

I have found that, if I am making purchases of clothing online, I tend to read the reviews to determine the proper size. Generally, however, I will stay with my usual size unless the reviews really stress that the item runs big or small.

With respect to restaurant reviews I rarely ever look at them. To me, people seem more apt to give a negative review to a restaurant than they are to give a positive review.  I do not understand the reasons why, but that has been my experience.

As a small business owner who had my own experience with malicious reviews-I blogged about it many years ago-I will  go out of my way to post a positive review.  If I have had a poor experience, as I had recently in a restaurant I have frequented before, I would contact the business owner directly instead of trying to destroy their business with a public negative review.

So I am back to my original question, how often do you rely on online reviews when making choices?

Gotham Queens GC Dan Schwartz is a prolific and proficient restaurant reviewer whose review of last night's Gotham restaurant I agree with :)

I do review restaurants almost everytime I dine.I travel alot and always am looking for new places to try. I also enjoy giving my feedback on Google Maps. I tell it like it is, both good and bad and do understand when it's a small establishment, a bad review can be devastating and I try to give the benefit of a repeat visit either before posting, or noting that I do plan to ammend the review with a follow up visit. I actually do not like when all reviews of a reviewer have a 5 star review because no place is always amazing or perfect. So a little honesty may be necessary for all, including the owner of the restaurant.

I rely on my personal experimental experiences more than anything else. I am willing to pay the cost of a meal to learn whether I would like to go back or recommend it to others.
But, to answer the question, I find reviews on Eater to be fairly accurate, though they skew towards the more expensive or hipster. I don't mind that but want to know what I am going to deal with in terms of noise levels and pushy waitstaff

I am a so-so home cook who was raised to love fresh ingredients and the proper use of herbs and fresh fruit so ....picky/picky/picky.
That is why I always respond to fredslist traveler requests for recommendations.

Certainly, and "fer sure", the online reviews are tainted by both the competitors and the friends of any company, and are therefore completely unreliable.
