Preparing

This was the conversation in our house recently.

Did your academic schooling prepare you to practice your chosen profession or craft?  So far, the answer is maybe a little.

My answer was that law school did not teach me how to practice law but it did teach me how to think and to write, in the end core qualities to practice the profession.

That said, it did not teach me how to work well with clients and keep them happy, attract new clients, keep track of billing and collections, how to speak in public . . .  Shall I go on?  In my opinion, core qualities to succeed in the profession.

What do you think? Did your academic schooling prepare you for where you are now?

I say all the time that if lawyers answered, off the top of their heads, questions we were supposed to answer on the bar exam we would be sued for malpractice.

Somewhat, but more in terms of thinking, listening and seeing more clearly, what could be.

I was trained as a teacher and studying pedagogy has been helpful in understanding how people learn. It was in the actual teaching that I learned the practical application. In law school I improved my analytical, writing and speaking skills.. Again it was in actual practice and in teaching law that I learned to implement what I learned. I am grateful that the knowledge and the skills I gained from my formal education serves me in everything I do and I never take it for granted.

Did my Social Science degree prepare me to develop the first microprocessor-based autopilot? Not entirely, but getting 100 on my Physics Final did assist me in getting a job with an electronics company !!! (way before the term "tech" was ever used!)

I changed majors 2x, careers several, and have gratitude for then learning I had in school ... how to learn, understand what is expected of me, how to understand / be with others (well actually a great deal of this came after college and in therapy). If I had a 'do-over' I would go to college again because it opened up a much larger world for me.
