Going to Woodstock, 53 Years Later
One of my biggest musical regrets is not getting to Woodstock in 1969. I had tickets and was frustrated by the Saturday closing of the roads to the site. I was stuck at the Port Authority Bus Terminal with my rock pal. To take away the pain, we went to four movies that day!
A few weeks ago, a friend told me that Brandi Carlile would be performing at the Bethel Woods Art Center this Friday. It is a musical venue set up on the actual grounds of the Woodstock Concert. I think Brandi is an amazing artist and I actually saw her perform at the 2008 SXSW festival in Austin. I have been thrilled to see her “finally” hurdle toward superstar fame. She has won many Grammy Awards and is famous for her friendships with Joni Mitchell and Elton John.
She writes fabulous songs including “The Story,” “Broken Horses,” “Right on Time,” and “The Joke”. Brandi’s voice expresses the range of emotions that make her songs unique. Her performance with Joni Mitchell at the Newport Folk Festival this summer went “viral”.
I know that she performs Joni Mitchell’s “Woodstock” on this concert tour. It won’t be the same, but it will definitely feel like a mission accomplished when Brandi sings the familiar refrain of “by the time I get to Woodstock”. Better late than Never!

Regardless, Woodstock will always be part of my unliberated hippie spirit.
