Validation

We all need validation. When it comes, it is often unexpected.
I was on line at SoCo, the ice cream shop on Railroad Street in Great Barrington - the best ice cream in the Berkshires- and had just ordered my favorite- Madagascar Vanilla ice cream and Pacific Northwest Raspberry Sorbet.
Behind me I heard, “May I have vanilla ice cream and raspberry sorbet?”
I wondered whether he had spied my cup of ice cream and sorbet.
He turned towards me and apparently, for the first time, realized that we had ordered the same combination. A smile and a mutual acknowledgement that it was the best combination.
Validation. Sometimes when you least expect it.

We have a local shop in Cocoa Beach called the Fat Donkey (best in Brevard County, so far). It gets locals and tourists waiting on lines to get their taste. I often see perplexed newbies trying to figure out the menu and flavors. I have tried many and have my and family favorites memorized to a tee. I often provide some explanation as the lines can be long. I love when they listen and come back to thank me for the recommendation.

Fred has a point - the validation speaks to our need to be in community, to find a common bond with someone feels good. And bonding over ice cream is makes perfect sense.
