Putting the Screens Away

Categories
Lifestyle

In my never-ending quest to get a good night’s sleep, I have read numerous articles about what to do before you go to bed. One of the most universal recommendations I have seen is turn off your screens approximately two hours before you get into bed.

I like to read before I go to sleep. And, since I read on a Kindle, it is difficult for me to turn off that screen before sleep. I do think, however, it is more important to turn off the cell phone before bedtime and place it in a location far away.

I have habitually, at night, put my phone away in my armoire with the armoire door closed. That way, I cannot see it. I also put it on “do not disturb” so it does not wake me.   In the years since I have started that habit I have not missed any important calls. Friends and family who need to reach me call my landline.

Where does your cell phone live at night?

Listen to this recent podcast from sleep scientist Dr. Matthew Walker. Very enlightening!

I keep mine on my night stand. I can't part with it and often wake up at 5am, read some emails and or other posts and then fall back asleep for another hour. Bad habit, I know.
