That Special Teacher

Did you ever have a teacher that left a lasting impression? Last week, one such teacher I had senior year in high school just popped into my mind, Mr. Higgins. And just thinking about Mr. Higgins made me smile.

For first semester senior year myself and some friends were looking for an elective that would be an “easy A.” Several older friends recommended “Greek and Latin in Modern English,” taught by Mr. Higgins. They told us it would be an easy A and helpful with vocabulary portion of the SATs. Based on those recommendations we all signed up.

Mr. Higgins was the surprise of the class. His excitement for teaching and love of the subject was just infectious. He would have the class of high school seniors singing in Latin and just loving it. Most importantly, however, I can still search for the Greek or Latin root in a word when trying to decipher the word’s meaning. And that I learned from Mr. Higgins.

Mr. Higgins taught me a life long skill and I loved the process of learning with him. Did you have a Mr. Higgins?

I did, indeed. Thelma Rosenbaum was a woman with incredible history. As my 10th grade English teacher she tossed a book on my desk and as she casually walked by said, "You will like this." It was the first book I read from cover to cover ... a 10th grader who was not engaged in school at all, fell in love with literature and with teaching. She never told me why she gave me "Sister Carrie" by Theodore Dreiser. I never asked but I did tell her many years later that it was "on her" that I became a teacher. She shrugged it off and said "it was "beshert" meaning "meant to be." Thank you Rona for bringing her to mind this morning.

I had several in HS that impacted me quite a bit. One in Economics, where I learned about the stock market there and it changed my outlook on businesses. I also had some great English teachers that opened up my eyes and brain in many ways.
