Tiny pocket

You ever wonder why there's a tiny pocket above the front pocket on some jeans? The pocket

I did so I consulted the oracle. Turns out it had a clear reason behind its creation. It’s just that we don’t use it for that reason today.

That small pocket originated back in the late 1800s with the first pair of jeans sold by Levi Strauss & Co and the reason for the little pocket was practical. It was there to store and protect a pocket watch. Who knew?

From Levi Strauss..."this extra pouch has served many functions, evident in its many titles: frontier pocket, condom pocket, coin pocket, match pocket and ticket pocket, to name a few."

I don't recall ever having used it for anything other than getting scraped from the rivets.

And clearly, the understanding was that the guys wearing the jeans would be "clock watchers" for whatever reason. Hence the rivets!

I knew this reason after working at the Gap for so many years in my twenties. It then became a style feature. Most used it for change when pocket watches went out of fashion.

I love it for my rings as well with the constant hand washing. Too often I have left them on a counter or sink.

This is a great blog Mitch. I have never used it and had no idea why it was ever placed there.

I actually had a pocket watch back in the day to go with the Levi's -- just needed to ask me rather than some oracle.
