Hurricane Reactive

Did anyone else up here in the Northeast have this experience with me over the weekend?

On relatively short notice, a hurricane was heading our way. I am a pretty cautious person and so started preparing. (Truth be told, I had the easy job – it was all about food).

But, when the Nassau County officials and (then) Governor Cuomo started warning that this event could harken to Superstorm Sandy, that sent me into overdrive.

We (ok, really Bill), spent Saturday taking in anything that could fly (as I was singing the Wicked Witch song from the Wizard of Oz). After all of the plants that were outside moved into my garage, it literally started to smell like a nursery. And then of course there are the crickets that came inside the garage with the plants.

I insisted on running to Oceanside to scoop up my mom. She and my dad had lived through Sandy and lost the entire first floor of their house and two cars at the time. The thought of her alone in the house – well, it was too much for me. Honestly, she wasn’t anxious at all.

I really don’t remember being this reactive to upcoming storms before Superstorm Sandy.

Anyone else experience a similar reaction?

It happened so fast and then it didn't...

We're actually the opposite. Since raising the house, we are a lot calmer about approaching storms.

We filled the cars and got some extra gas. And food. Lol. But I think we dodged a bullet with this one.

I bought a dozen bagels, topped off my gas in car and that was it. Watched a typical summer rain storm. North Lynbrook sits high and is away from the water, so no fears of flooding ever. Wind is the fear as we have a lot of older trees in this neighborhood that can knock out power. But I was not anxious at all.

As we all know, "an ounce of prevention..." And thank you (Bill) for doing all that preparation. Clearly, it worked! I hope you get the crickets out of the garage.

I admit I was worried. We received many texts fro the local electric company and internet device providers warning of outages due to falling trees and tree limbs. We live on the Cold Spring Reservoir and have an active stream. The wind which can be most destructive slowed down considerably from the warning. Out power was out for 8 hours, but we have a generator, internet was sporadic, but real damage
Was nil. We dodged a bullet. I will worry again the next time.

The weather and media teamed up for a scary buzz. Luckily Henri had his own plan.
We were very lucky on Sunday. Can't believe your mom was so mellow.
I got drenched from Henri's rainy impact on Saturday in Central Park and missed Bruce etc. but, c'est la vie.
