Sea Sick!

Last Saturday I went sailing with my friends David Berger and Guy deBoer (pictured). Sailing

If the name Guy deBoer is unfamiliar to you, mark it well as he will be world famous at the end of next year when he (and his boat Spirit) will be the first American solo sailor to win the around the World Golden Globe Race which starts in France. 

David and I are supporters who took the opportunity on a beautiful sunny day to enjoy sailing on Spirit.  

Only problem was that almost as soon as we left the harbor I got queezy and it got worse and worse (and worse)...

Seeing my discomfort, I was urged to focus on the horizon and asked if I wanted to turn around.  
I don't know what was worse, the feelings and rumblings in my body or the ignominious thoughts of quitting in my mind. 

Of course, I resolved to endure, minute by minute, wave by wave, breeze by breeze (Queeze by Queeze) while my crew mates cheerfully chatted away like old salts, drank beer, munched on Hero sandwiches and found their sea legs.

In the end, I made it through the ordeal with a very small victory (I never leaned over the side) 
and great admiration for what lays ahead for Guy.

I suppose that’s the Spirit!

Next time go to the drug store and buy sea bands. They go on your wrist and work like acupuncture. Costs about 5 bucks. I use them whenever I go on a cruise

My wife also gets sea sick easily and that means minimal times going out on a boat, unless it's a cruise ship, then she is fine.

Worst feeling! I get it often out on the water when the boat is stopped and we are just rocking.

The worst part is knowing it’s a long way back to land - and having to endure it for the length of the voyage. By the way there is no shame in leaning over the side.

I’ve spent the whole day with my eyes closed until we got back to shore...and that was after leaning over the side.

Terrible feeling! I used to get so seasick as a kid on my uncles fishing boat, they used to let me throw up over the side because it attracted the big game fish. LOL he said I was better than the chum bucket. Dramamine works, but then you just want to nap.

Closing eyes makes it worse and will bring on nausea. Best to look out to the horizon, outside of any cabin and try to relax.

Happy to report that I don’t t suffer from that. I have a scary story of being a sea in a storm with the port side cap rails under water, no land in sight, 10 ppl sick and I kept making tea for the sufferers.

Sailing is amazing-I do love it too. Maybe try a little patch behind the ear next time.
