Inauguration Day Fashion

Unfortunately, I was unable to watch the Inauguration ceremony live last Wednesday due to my participation in an on going trial (my experience in trying a case virtually is definitely fodder for another blog). When I finally arrived home late Wednesday evening, I could only watch recaps or read about the festivities.

The festivities and politics aside, I want to discuss the fashion. I noticed that on Tuesday night, Jill Biden wore all purple. On Wednesday, Vice President Harris was also wearing all purple, along with Michelle, Obama and Hillary Clinton.

I also noticed that, on Inauguration Day, Jill Biden wore all blue as Melania Trump did in 2017. This piqued my curiosity and I researched whether there was symbolism involved in the choice of dress on Inauguration Day. Apparently, several first ladies have worn blue to signify trust, unity, and confidence. Laura Bush also choose to wear blue last Wednesday to project a message of unity. Vice President Harris and the other former first ladies chose purple as a symbol of the combination of red and blue which makes purple.

Personally, I loved Michelle Obama’s Inauguration Day outfit as well as Jill Biden’s. I would purchase either outfit if I could. Most breath taking to me, however, was the white embroidered coat and dress that Dr. Biden wore on Wednesday night. On both the coat and the dress were flowers embroidered representing the state flower of all fifty states with the flower of Delaware embroidered near Dr. Biden’s heart. I thought the coat and dress were just exquisitely crafted and beautifully symboylic.

Did you notice the Inauguration Day fashion? What did you think? Were you aware of the level of symbolism that is involved in the choice of dress?

The only thing I have noticed is the ease with which women are able to wear pants. I remember having to wear a skirt to work no matter what the weather. In fact, we couldn't wear pants to school until I got to college.

Thanks Rona. The symbolism originated with Jacqui Kennedy’s ascendency. But most memorable of all for me was National Poet Laureate self-declared 2036 POTUS candidate Amanda Forman’s yellow dress coat and bold red hair band.

My wife follows the fashion. I notice the pants v skits/dresses in part due the the cultural shift it evidences. As I indicated in my previous day’s blog, my interest focused on the day’s special symbolism.

I guess I'm a bit younger than you. I remember not being allowed to wear pants in elementary school. Air raid drills were problematic in short skirts!!!

I should have included her. I LOVED the yellow coat, especially paired with the red headband. A color combination that worked great but I never would have thought of.

It's interesting, to me, how the fashion follows the symbolism.

Notice there is no conversation re: President Biden’s (doesn’t that sound good) sartorial choices... so much more fun having these conversations when there are women in the mix!
I thought it was a fabulous event... and Lady Gaga!!!

Interesting. I read an article about the significance of women dressing in color and monochromatic color at that. Was definitely a glorious powerful theme.
