Working 9 to 5

One of my very first, favorite and fabulous woman was Ms. Dolly Herself! An amazing down-to-earth, country star singer, who is a beautiful, smart and a talented female icon. WWDD? I know....not the first woman you’d think of when naming a personal favorite. I’ve enjoy how she embraced her independence and strength from a place of gorgeous beauty and kind southern demeanor. One of my first favorite movies was 9 to 5. Dolly made her debut as an administrative assistant, then referred to as a secretary. She asserts herself, stands up to her less-than-respectful boss and ties him up, using leathers, garage door-opener equipment, and a gag. She tortures his mind with a daily dose of Days of our Lives and threatens to exposes his bad behavior to his unsuspecting wife. The early days of a healthy blend of beauty and brains. Support for women with careers. Dolly turned 75 on January 19th. Happy birthday Dolly! Who’s your Dolly?

A friend of mine had a minor role in 9-5

She had and has quite a career. Very giving with charities as well. RBG was one I looked towards as great in recent history.

Victoria is my Dolly. From starting out as a NYC construction attorney, to CEO coach, to professor she fought through sexism and condescension in a way that was pure "Victoria". With a wink, a smile and a spine of steel she expertly navigated through a "man's world", especially in her early years. But knowing her, she would give all credit to her mom. She could write a book!

Thanks honey!!!! yes, law, construction, real estate and business present challenges for younger women especially. That’s why I started the Women’s Leadership Institute at Mercy, and have always mentored young women.
And yes, my mom is definitely my Dolly! She studied psychology in grad school, and then went into a family jewelry/watch business. She had a long career in the industry, including being one of the first delegates to open China to western industrialization in the 70s. She came and spoke to my school when I was in sixth grade, and then went on to have a long and productive career in the jewelry and importing business. Her company sold to Bloomingdale’s, Bergdorf ‘s, B.Altman’s. She always did - and does - everything with grace, style and discipline.

Even before I scrolled down past Paul's post above to "name" my Dolly, I planned to write in Shelly. She remains my conscience.

I've had many and have been a fan of the Dolly for decades. The first was a teacher in 10th grade who was called before the HUAC to "name names" and did not. And then fast forward to a most amazing human is my spouse who has broken barriers, paved ways, lifted me up and supported whims and wild ideas for over 40 years. And look around at the amazing Dolly's among us in Gotham ... no way I am naming names and leaving anyone out.

Holy moly!!! What an awesome couple of ladies! I had no idea you started the ladies program. Sounds like your Mom modeled strength for you. I love this .

An incredible woman who is self aware, business minded and uses her wealth and power in amazingly powerful ways

Carly, ask Victoria about the time she held a construction meeting in midtown when she was about 30. Lots of old men in hard hats. Very funny story.
