Uncertain? Certainly!

So what’s really changed other than the date on the calendar? 2020 was marked by so much uncertainty – I dare say more than usual – and here we are in 2021.

One of my favorite’s by Sondheim is “With So Little to Be Sure Of” is about being grateful for a beautiful moment in time, “a marvelous moment” despite there being “so little to be sure of.”

We can be certain that the sun will rise in the morning and set in the evening.  We can count on Spring following Winter and Summer preceding Autumn which will be followed by Winter and the start of another new year.

“Crazy business, this life we live in,” wrote Sondheim. We have no idea what wonder awaits or when we will experience those marvelous moments. It’s all so uncertain.

The only thing we really control is how we start this year … the rest is a mystery and beyond our control. I started my year with a long run in Central Park early on January 1st. I wrote down my business and personal goals and my goal timeline; I put meetings, appointments and workouts on the calendar – in pencil out of respect for uncertainty.

How did you start 2021?

The same way I do every morning. I read the obituary and if i don't see my name i wake up. Sometimes i just open my eyes, spread my arms and if I don't feel wood i get up.

Contemplating a lot about life and where it may lead us. A move to Florida is very enticing right about now...

Managing our mindset and how we respond to events beyond our control is the only thing we can truly control. :)

I sure do. I can't say why, but I know it was good because the moment I saw the name , I could not help but smile.

Shelley, like you I wrote down my business and personal goals for 2021. There is a lot of uncertainty but the plan is to push forward and be the best person I could be.
