Making the Team

Categories

Do you remember when you were a wee lad or lass and it was time to pick teams for dodgeball, basketball or some gym team sport, or neighborhood front-lawn game?  It was an interesting study of the human condition, as children. The desire to be "picked for the team" and not be the last man or woman standing was gut-wrenching. Remember?

I think I was picked last once, because I had red hair. The boy that sat as captain, thought he might "catch freckles" if I was on his team. Poor fool. I ate his soul for breakfast and we won our co-ed Four Square game. Tongue out

Fast forward 30 years. Last week, I received an email from the best lady golfer at Applebrook. She specifically asked me if I wanted to join the team. I was thrilled!  Those childhood memories flooded back. The wee girl voice inside said, "OMG, she picked me!!"

As we get older, the value of our teams, friends, colleagues, partners and mentors mean so much.

Remember to tell your team-mates how much they mean to you. Don't forget how important Human Capital is to our lives. It IS THEE most valuable treasure.

GO TEAM!

Everyone desires to belong to a team especially when your on the winning Team. One of the best gratitude is accomplishing a task with someone and be able to celebrate afterwards.

It is a wonderful feeling to be chosen by someone you hold in high esteem

Congratulations! Yes, it is such a vote of confidence and affirmation to be chosen. Teams are powerful. We are tribal! (And competitive!)

My childhood memories were filled with being picked last in sports as I was short and not athletic in my mind. I always shied away from playing sports and to this day, I sometimes still feel it. But with my son, who is quite athletic, I can re-live my childhood dreams as he excels in baseball, enjoys a pick up game of football or basketball and is always active. It does make a difference. But today, I am proud to be chosen by many in my field so maybe it was a good lesson to redirect my skill set into something I was comfortable with.

I was not a good athlete. So, I was always picked last. . . .

As a little league manager and coach I really enjoyed helping my players get better. I still recall one of the players we (it was me and a co-manager that spring and summer) coached developing into a first round pick the following year. I try to apply that approach as parent, friend, colleague...
