Maybe

Maybe, which is defined as Perhaps or Possibly, is not a word I like to hear in response to a proposal.  It puts off the eventual answer and frustrates me.

In the words of The Chantels:

Maybe, if I hold your hand
You will understand
And maybe, if I kissed your lips
I’ll be at your command
Oh, maybe.

Buddy Holly had it even better when he sang:

Maybe baby, I’ll have you
Maybe baby, you’ll be true
Maybe baby, I’ll have you for me (all for me)

Whatever the context, unless we are engaged in negotiations, please don’t say Maybe!

My father always said “count to ten before saying No”.
With thought, the same applies to Maybe.

When someone says maybe to me, my response is typically..."That means no" (or 'yes) depending on the situation and person. This often prompts the person to elaborate on their hesitation or make a decision.

Agreed! I do not appreciate "wishy-washy!" A hard "no" or an absolute "yes" is an answer. "Maybe" is not an option.

Not a word I usually use. However as we leave the old year and move into the new I’d like to think that the word opens discussion to possibilities. Actually something I use in my negotiations.

When I was living and working in Japan “ Maybe “ definitely meant no . As a parent “ maybe “ meant I’m answering but I’m not listening so maybe will keep you quiet until I can address the real answer . In most cases “ maybe “ carries a negative connotation . It’s nice to finally be in a position where NOBODY can respond “maybe “ to me . The word “maybe “ implies control . Nobody has control over me except Diane and she knows never to say “ maybe .” Yeah Derf I agree . Just don’t put yourself in a position to be told “ maybe” by anyone . Problem solved .

Pondered this since reading the blog early this morning.

Context matters.

Think "Maybe I'm Amazed" -- my fave McCartney solo work , classically covered by The Faces on Long Player (My fave Lp by this great band essentially broken up by the Stones; another live version by Faces here .).
