Sports Fan

There must be dozens of books written about the psychology of being a sports fan. I’m not sure what takes over ….. either it’s transference or something else.

I surprised myself the other night as I watched the football game between the San Francisco 49ers and the Seattle Seahawks.

I follow the Seahawks - a slight tip of the hat to my daughter and son-in-law who lived in Seattle.

It was an exciting and memorable game. What surprised me was how invested I became in the game. Involuntary screams, claps and snaps as the tide of the game shifted from team to team.

It was just a game ... or was it? Something else was going on and I was swept along for the ride.

We are semi-civilized beasts. I feel a similar emotion / passion when going to a music concert. It’s a connection and collective of everyone “rooting” for the same thing.

Some say Sports are the Opiate of the masses.
In these times, we need the escape and surprises that Sports provide even more.
