A Great Way to Support Our Elders
Many know of my affiliation as chair of the board of directors of Services Now for Adult Persons, Inc. ("SNAP”). Others in Gotham also play key roles in support SNAP’s work including as board members (Elder Law Attorney Jeff Greenwood as Board Secretary and mortgage advisor Renee Richter as a fellow board member) or working as professionals to help the agency make a difference (including Joshua Zinder as the project architect for our new building, Steve Glassberg as our construction counsel, Scott Bloom as our real estate leasing advisor and Nancy Schess as a Human Resources counsel).
In that role, I recently invited friends and colleagues and posted a “MAD (as in “Make-A-Difference’) Mondays” appeal on Gotham’s listserve known as “Fredslist” after its co-founder (and who in this space I generally refer to as “Friday’s blogger”) and now ask you to support SNAP’s May 14, 2026 celebration of more than 45 years at the forefront of providing vital services to the older adults of Eastern Queens. Please join us that day from 6:00 to 10:00 p.m. at the Stewart Manor Country Club, 51 Salisbury Avenue, Stewart Manor, NY 11530. (Please see accompanying invite in the image accompanying today’s blog” and linked invite letter.).
Since 1980, SNAP has served the communities of Bellerose, Floral Park Glen Oaks, New Hyde Park, North Shore Towers and Queens Village. SNAP has enlarged its footprint throughout the Borough in the provision of hot, nutritious meals, programs and services to older adults and their caregivers throughout the Queens to Bayside, Cambria Heights, Douglaston, Fresh Meadows, Far Rockaway, Hollis, Hollis Hills, Holliswood, Jamaica, Jamaica Estates, Kew Garden Hills, Laurelton, Little Neck, Oakland Gardens, Pomonok, Rosedale and Springfield Gardens. The Caregiver Program of SNAP serves Queens Community Districts 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, and 14. The Case Management and Transportation Programs serves adults residing in Queens Community Districts 8, 11, or 13.
SNAP continues to grow and government funding has not kept pace with the increased demand for our services. Inflation together with the rising costs of insurance, utilities and food have become a fiscal challenge for all non-profit organizations. With baby-boomers over age 60 and looking for educational and recreational activities, and the dramatic rise in the number of older adults seeking help, SNAP finds it necessary to reach out to you for support. The agency also seeks your support to supplement government assistance to complete our new building in Floral Park to replace the facility on the Creedmoor Campus it must vacate as part of plans to build 2022 new housing units there.
Your tax deductible contribution in support of SNAP’s celebration of 45 years of serving Queens will make a difference for seniors and their families and enable SNAP to provide valuable services that help older adults maintain their independence and prevent premature institutionalization. Tickets are $175 (via Zelle at: GALA@SNAPQUEENS.ORG or mail checks payable to "Services Now for Adult Persons” to SNAP Brookville, Attn: Cathy Cahn, 133-33 Brookville Blvd., Suite LL5 Rosedale NY 11422).
