"The Regular"

A few days ago, after a morning workout at the gym, I went to the snack bar for my "regular". The woman behind the counter greeted me with a smile and asked "The Regular?" A nod. Another nod and the breakfast smoothie with pineapple, mango, in orange juice, with a vanilla protein shot was under way.
It's amazing how my "Regular" has morphed over the years. At different times -- with time and depending upon the time of day -- "Regular" has meant different things. It's been toasted dry English muffin, multi-grain bagel with cream cheese (easy on the cream cheese), tuna salad on whole wheat with lettuce, and provolone and genoa salami with lettuce and mustard on rye --- to name only a few.
The nice thing about “The Regular” is that, after being ordered once or twice, all that was required was my being at the same place with a smile and a nod.
I always wondered how they knew and remembered. After all, I was probably one of hundreds. And when I left never to return, I wondered whether they would wonder what happened to "Toasted English Dry"?

I've never been able to eat the same thing every day. The cafeteria in our building has the exact same ingredients on their sald bar every single day. That drives me crazy. It's to the point where I have to go out of the building if I want to have a salad. There just aren't enough possiblities to vary it any more.

Every morning in Key West I get on my bike and go to Island's best con leche at 5 Brothers and the guy looks at me and without a word makes my 2 regular medium cups (a little dark with a level spoon of sugar). Heavenly to greet the morning drinking it out on our front porch with Jo.

One of the great things in life is to develop relations; some last longer than others; some begin later in life; developing nurturing them and receiving the benefits makes life nice, and "regular"

At the diner near my home, we generally have the same waitress whenever we go in. While I usually order the same meal it surprises me how she remembers all of my variations on the meal, i.e. grilled vegetables burnt but chicken moist. And that's why we always ask to sit in her section.
