Coming Clean

Manhattan, Washer, Dryer, Laundry

I'm just wondering who does their own laundry? I do. I've tried giving it to the guys downstairs, but they put it away wet or use strange smelling softeners or fold thing so oddly, I'd just rather do it myself. I have to use the laundry in the basement of my coop. Its a luxury in Manhattan to have your own washer-dryer. Statistically, only 20% of apartments on this island have their own equipment. A real status symbol. Sometimes the real estate agent will make sure the dryer is running during an open house just so people know.

And people can get quite irrational about it. Street Easy did a survey to find out what people would pay per month to have their own washer-dryer and not have to share, many people said over $200 month...

During the Civil War, washer women were paid more than soldiers.

In military lingo, a laundry bag is a parachute.

At Walt Disney World they do 285,000 lbs of laundry every DAY. That mouse must be clean.

So what do you think? Does Fred Klein wash his own blue jeans? Does Norman Spizz handwash his hankies?

We should all do what, in the long run, gives us joy, even if it is only picking grapes or sorting the laundry. -E. B. White

Yes, the washer/dryer closet in our apartment is a bragging point!

Over the years I have gotten some of my most creative ideas washing and folding my clothes. Yes I am one of the privileged few who can remain at home on 102nd St. As to $200/month I suggest they unplug their computers, sound systems and television and not worry about the dryer.

My husband loves our washer/dryer. He loves it so much that he insists on doing our laundry. Guess what? I love it too.

Does that mean you do it, but not well?
Or does that mean you don't do it?
Your imperfections are charming. Sometimes.

My wife does the whole family's laundry, and her housekeeper irons the stuff that needs ironing. When I was working in the City full time at the bank, I wore a freshly laundered shirt every day, and those were washed at the laundry, and ironed as well.

We have the "new-fangled" washer/dryer units that are both front-loading. And they're not terribly good-- sometimes the washer will emit a rather foul smell, and has to be wiped down with disinfectant. I think they're made by LG. The old-fashioned machines we used to have (and they lasted something like twelve years) were much less costly to operate, I am told...

I have not been allowed to do so since our first apartment. I did get to do it in Fla when I visited my mom (because Shelly could not go -- that might be a substitute blog... or not.....)
