When we came home last night we turned on the TV and watched a movie I haven't seen since it was in the theatres twenty-four years ago.  Thelma and Louise. A classic. It got me thinking about my favorite movies over the years.

 

Here is part of my list:

 

Breaking Away, which I mimic by giving myself an Italian bicycle riding name.

Power of One.

Welcome to Collinwood. Great, funny characters. One of the few movies I own on DVD.

Two of my favorite Woody Allen movies - Sweet and Lowdown (Sean Penn is superb) and Midnight in Paris (great theme and message)

O Brother, Where Art Thou?

Little Miss Sunshine

A River Runs Through It

American Hustle

Silver Linings Playbook

Black Swan

Of course any list has to include The Godfather, The Ten Commandments, and The Shawshank Redemptioin.

Currently at MoMA there is a Technicolor festival - I've seen some great movie which I've never seen on the Big Screen including: Wizard of Oz (you miss so much on a TV screen) Singing in the Rain, American in Paris, Gone with the Wind, Magnificent Obsession -- This week will see A Star is Born -- check it out, they have a wonderful theatre. Also currently exhibiting Martin Scorsese's collection of original movie posters!

Some like Lawrence of Arabia, The Longest Day, Ivanhoe and 55 Days In Peking folks know.
Others such as The Trojan Horse and The Avenger (aka The Legend of Aeneas) may be less known and only available via DVD (though you may find it on YouTube). Also Cast A Giant Shadow and Gettysburg. In this century, The Last Legion and King Arthur.

Being a sci fi fan I would have to add Sleeper, Independence Day, Twelve Monkeys (which I caught on tv late last night), and Avatar.

Burt Fendelman: I cannot believe that not one of the movie mavens mentioned It's a Wonderful Life. Sure, it gets boring after seeing it every Christmas season, but folks, it still is the best.

Many movies on your list on contemporary classics. Some of my favorites are classic movies now viewed through Ted Turner's classic movie collection: The Ghost & Mrs. Muir--my absolute classic love story; The African Queen, Gone With the Wind and in the contemporary realm, many of the movies with Robin Williams, ie Mrs Doubtfire... Brad Pitt's movies are also wonderful as his range is extensive and each movie tops.
