Dying To Live In New York City?

Categories

With the tomorrow’s guest speaker, Shelby Rowe, being an expert in suicide prevention, at the LGBTQ meeting, it got me to thinking about the topic and what are the statistics for suicide in New York City. I was happily surprised to find that we are at half the national average, in other words, only half as many (still too many) are likely to kill themselves as in the rest of the country.

Why is that, do you think?

Is it because the struggle, “if you can make it here…, “ is so great that we won’t give it up easily?

My sweetheart says its because New York is so full of life.

Why is it that people who seemingly have “everything,” Robin Williams, Cleopatra, Tchaikovsky, are so prone to it?

I know, often drugs and alcohol are part of the picture.

I hope tomorrow to learn some ways to help.

We’re all in this together.

Never a good answer but an important thing any of us can do involves showing support for our friends, family and colleagues. People despair and there must be things we can do to learn. Probably makes sense that anyone who can make it to the Friars Club Thursday to seize the opportunity to learn.

Happiness, it is said, is a by-product of pursuit (ie, it's not about the pursuit of happiness but the happiness of pursuit... to quote someone). Maybe it's because we're such a driven city?

Ask about "Night Fears". Things are always better with the light of day and anticipation anxiety is always worse than reality.

thanks for the post for LGBT meeting tomorrow. It will be quite informative, and I invite you all to join us for a lively discussion, ways we can help and what we can learn to make it a safer place, especially for our youth.
