With the latest news of the largest security breach at Anthem I thought it might be a good public service to list the Top 25 most used passwords (as compiled by SplashData). I hope you don't use these.

5 qwerty
6 123456789
7 1234
8 baseball
9 dragon
10 football
11 1234567
12 monkey
13 letmein
14 abc123
15 111111

20 michael
21 superman
22 696969

SplashData also offers these tips to be safer from hackers online:

  • Use passwords of eight characters or more with mixed types of characters.
  • Avoid using the same username/password combination for multiple websites.

And as a back up, because we all have difficulty remembering our passwords, write them down in a little journal.

My passwords are all a variation on a dearly departed pet's name in another language, plus my numbers.

I use a combination of different names and such…mix in numbers and characters. Of course it's difficult to remember them, so I use a app - "Keeper" - to help me remember them. It's free on one devise, but there is a charge if you want to sync the passwords on several devices…But I am hopeful that soon passwords will be obsolete - as different site are using newer sign in options.

It's funny but my first password was for my phone answering machines. My second my Atm and now the little bookWebmaster notes runs several pages long.
But it goes beyond passwords to user names to even server names (Jonathan created some interesting ones) or the name of my home on FourSquare (credit Marisa).
In my teens since I was the MLB I preferred 62 (wonder if any now why?)

Funny pws are getting longer and harder to recall. I long for the 4 digit world..or less
Recently I was asked a security question that I am sure I answered many many years ago... "What was your first concert?."
Who could forget that..It was U2.
Apparently not, as the pw requires 4 letters. So now I rewrote my own history.

I'm thinking that now that no one is using these passwords, I could switch to them. :)

My method is pattern passwords, look at your keyboard, create a patten of 8 letters/number and all you have to do is remember the pattern. Easy!
