Facebook?

Note an evolving social media phenomenon.

Some people post to Facebook every time they grab a cup of coffee, buy a new pair of shoes or eat a meal. (You know I am not exaggerating). Others only share recipes or links. Some share family details with reckless abandon and others use codes to describe their children. There is an entire generation that seems to be slowly disappearing from Facebook. I know that its utility in stalking my children is waning.

When I posted a happy anniversary wish to my husband today, I actually stopped to ask why I was posting. We had already wished each other happy anniversary in person and cards multiple times. And I am pretty conscious of trying not to make annoying posts that clog news feeds and email boxes. So, I thought, what is the purpose of this post?

I concluded that I was enjoying a happy moment and that it was really ok to share it with my family and friends. Facebook was the medium of choice to make that happen.

What is your favorite use of Facebook? Conversely, what is your pet peeve about how others use Facebook?

I think it is a creative platform and means of expression, photographic or otherwise.

It's a fantastic platform to keep in touch with family across the country! I stay in touch with past clients as well - used properly it can be an amazing tool!

The key is to use it properly. Seeing every move you make throughout the day is ridiculous. I don't need to know about every restaurant visit either. Just my opinion. Otherwise it is useful to spread important family news to a wide range of people.

(written as I await the SOTC speech) I'll start with my pet peeve and I will not do it. I do not tag people not in a photo (when photo is an invite or something like that). I will not post promo material in a wrong forum, even if the cause justifies some promo. Most of my posts to FB derive are "feeds" of my posts to twitter; many related to my work and involvements. I often get questioned if I saw something on Facebook and often the newsfeed just gets cluttered. If a friend makes a post or comment I find inappropriate I have no problem removing it. My wife likes sharing social doings and friends come to expect her to take a photo while we are out and post it; that happened at dinner Sat eve (one comment was "You out with my friends." which I found a bit weird) and at the Superbowl gathering at a certain diner in Brooklyn. We also found once we got mom my old iPhone (thanks to nudging from my son who flew to S. FLA to "train" her) she enjoyed FB as a way to keep in touch and follow what her kids, their spouses and grandchildren do. Many things Shelly posts with that in mind.

I agree with the third post-its a great platform if you're using it correctly. I have some "friends" who post when they are going to take a bubble bath. That's TMI. But, as you know, I have been enjoying posting pics lately. It's a great way to keep in touch.

I started Facebook to connect with my fraternity brothers. If it's not interesting, I don't post it. I don't connect on Facebook with business connection, kids or anyone esle who might get offended by offensive things. I never sell or do business on Facebook, it is solely for social purposes. If it is controversial, I try to think twice, sometimes three times, I know that may shock some of you ;)

I post whatever makes me smile or I think might make some one else smile. For me, FaceBook is a fun way to keep in touch, share fun news and warn my friends when I've dispatched the flying monkeys. :)

Believe it or not, FB is an excellent tool to inform others about deaths and funeral arrangements...how morbid is that!

Pet peeves: 1. Cat fights that break out online. Really people keep your dirty laundry to yourselves. Take it offline. Entirely unprofessional. 2. Non-stop promos. Please I only post photos of my work and I rarely promote. Positives: 1. I have found family members I didn't even know existed. They love seeing photos of our daughter and I so enjoy seeing photos of their families. 2. As an executor, I agree with Riva that posting info about my friend's funeral (nearly 3 years ago) was a godsend. 3. It's a wonderful way to stay connected with my friends who don't live around the corner.

For me the best part of FB is posting & seeing photos/updates of family all over the world, and friends that we rarely get to see. Having cousins from Phuket, to Spain, Colombia, Peru, all over the US, and new family in France, it is a marvelous way to stay connected. My Mom loves it when I show her photos of family she misses dearly. I primarily post to share the joy of family & friends. near or far. I have been found guilty by my kids of 'over-posting'. When they were in school it allowed glimpses into what they were up to...if they allowed it!

I have never taken any 'dirty laundry' public. That is a major pet-peeve. Bz. wise I try to only connect with people I've grown to like through networking, want to know them better, and who wont be filling my feed with 'sales pitches'. I have a hard rule that I do not 'connect' on FB with any employees...let's keep that separate to prevent potential problems!
