Here's a "what would you do"

I woke up to the sounds of suburbia...a snow thrower tooling up to move the snow. Lovely.

Then a knock at the door. Not just a knock but that four tap knock of familiarity. I thought a neighbor needed help so I quickly threw on some pants, a Tshirt and hurried downstairs only to find no one at the door. I opened it and heard an unfamiliar "Hello?"

It was an enterprising young man asking if I wanted him, his snow thrower and three guys to take care of my driveway and yard. I was both impressed and annoyed that he is knocking at my door at 7AM.

What would you do? Engage his services, do it yourself or...?

There isn't enough snow for a snow blower today but normally, if a fair price, I would hire the kids

I have the best snow blower. His name is Gustavo. I pay him in November and he comes every time it snows to shovel my driveway.. I looked outside my window this morning and my driveway and car are all clean

Definitely engage his services. Love the initiative and courage.
Rona Gura

Absolutely admire the initiative. I would pay him and go back to sleep.

Not many kids are out their shoveling snow any more. I would shovel, probably just to get some exercise, but if was like last year, they get the job.

I had some kids at my door as well - I was just about to hire them because I admired their entrepreneurial spirit but I was looking for a reason to exercise =)

The only thing I enjoyd about winter in MI was shoveling snow. It was great exercise! Notice I said shove and not walk slowly behind a snow thrower which we called a snow blower. I might howver, slip the kids a few bucks for being thoughtful/industrious unless hey were my kids in which case I would let gem help for free.

I live in NYC, no shoveling required. :)

We have a 150 foot long driveway (gravel) plus seventy-five feet of front walk and a large stoop. Plus a staircase to the back (kitchen) door. Way more than I can handle. So I have a service that comes when it snows more than a couple of inches. I loathe, hate and detest snow and cold.

I like Jeff's answer. Enterprising or not, it's disrespectful to bang on someone's door at 7am (see Fred's blog). In some states that is legal grounds to be shot on sight.
