A True Confession

Mitch’s last blog inspired me to write about this topic:

I have a confession to make; I do not like and prefer not to eat meat. My older daughter feels similarly. I am not a vegetarian because I will eat poultry in any form as well as fish. This is not a political decision for me, rather it is simply a matter of taste.

I do not normally discuss my eating habits and was recently shocked to learn that those who are closest to me did not know that I have an aversion to meat. My brother-in-law and sister-in-law are always very generous hosts. Whenever we are invited to their home for a meal, there is always an overabundance of food. While at their home recently for a bar-b-que, they served numerous appetizers and side dishes but the “star” of the meal was a huge platter of steak. Not wanting to appear unappreciative, I said nothing and my daughter and I filled our plates with the side dishes.

Prompted by my husband, I called my sister-in-law the next day and told her about mine and my daughter’s dietary habits. Being that we are close, she was surprised to first learn now that my daughter and I are not meat eaters. Compelled by her surprise, I called my sister, brother, and mother-in-law. I shocked to learn that none of them knew about my disdain for meat.

If you invite me for dinner and serve meat, I am not still sure whether I would say anything but I definitely will not eat it. What’s your food aversion?

I always inquire of the eating "requirements" of guests; in most cases I know it from dining out together.

I know how much you like seafood, but realized you had an aversion to meat! I guess
I just know what you like and don't know what you don't like!

I shy away from red meat and eat it 10 times/year at most

Wow. I think I knew that!!! I am a big red meat fan which is definitely hereditary. But would be much healthier without it.

My daughter went through a little vegetarian phase in high school. I tried not to tease her about it too much. There is nothing more natural than eating meat.
