Hughie's Brother

Lyrics have been abounding in recent blogs. No lyrics (except for two lines later) but I will share my special regards for one of the music icons of my generation. We saw James Taylor at Jones Beach last night. We also saw him in the Berkshires less than two weeks ago at his annual July 4th concert at Tanglewood. We have seen him many times over the years. I don't think you can see too much of James Taylor.
We have a special affinity for James. We used to see him on Martha’s Vineyard at concerts given by his son Ben Taylor -- sometimes with Carly Simon, his former wife. We have seen him over the years at Tanglewood. Since we stay with his brother and sister-in-law at their bed and breakfast in Aquinnah on Martha’s Vineyard, we have come to think of him as family. And there is a family resemblance that makes James familiar - not a distant on stage performer.
If you’ve ever been to a James Taylor concert, you know that he is a storyteller and there’s a story behind every one of his songs -- stories that he shares. Many of the stories are familiar because they are Taylor family stories that his brother, Hughie, has also shared with us.

And there is one lyric of his that I’ll share with you…

“Shower the people you love with love

Show them the way that you feel…”

I was showing a group of middle school students all the wonders of New York, but we were late and were rushing down some street in midtown...I nearly crashed right into Mr. Taylor. I apologized, and kept moving. Later, I asked the students if they knew who James Taylor is. One student readily replied, he's the brother of Ann Taylor, right?

So funny Cayce! During the concert I was wondering if any of our kids even know who JT is...the crowd at Jones Beach certainly did! He still rocks!!

My family recently decided that next July 4 we are going to Tanglewood to see James Taylor. Maybe we should meet up there for dinner!

BTW- "Sweet Baby James" is actually JT's nephew who was named after James. The song is a lullaby that James wrote while on the way to see his nephew for the first time.

James tells the SBJ story in pretty much every concert. Last saw him on a bill with Carol King (attended with my daughter). What I find so special about James involves how as good a songwriter as he is, he remains as good an interpreter of songs by others (think Carol's "You've Got A Friend"). What I also find of interest is how my interaction with James was via Blood Sweat & Tears first post Al Kooper LP of the same name which included Fire & Rain. Bought BS&T in Jan 1970 and SBJ that August.
I prefer the Sweet Baby James version: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C3uaXCJcRrE

I saw James Taylor when I was in college at Stony Brook. Being young at the time, we thought it would be fun to sleep on the ticket line overnight to get good seats. We had a blast on line and got middle first row seats. the concert was great and I will never forget seeing his pink argyle socks!!
