Go organic...or else

The Environmental Working Group (EWG) put out a list last month of the "dirtiest fruit and vegetables." Those that contain the most pesticides. As the shopper in the family this piqued my interest.

Here's the top 12 "dirtiest" conventionally grown:

  1. Apples
  2. Strawberries
  3. Grapes
  4. Celery
  5. Peaches
  6. Spinach
  7. Sweet Bell Peppers
  8. Nectarines (imported)
  9. Cucumbers
  10. Cherry Tomatoes
  11. Snap Peas (imported)
  12. Potatoes

To help you feel better...here's the "clean" list

  1. Avocadoes
  2. Sweet Corn
  3. Pineapples
  4. Cabbage
  5. Sweet Peas (frozen)
  6. Onions
  7. Asparagus
  8. Mangoes
  9. Papayas
  10. Kiwi
  11. Eggplant
  12. Grapefruit
  13. Cantelope
  14. Cauliflower
  15. Sweet Potatoes

Or just buy organic and you're safe...maybe ;)

I like things more on first list than second.

"Maybe" is right - this doesn't even address the GMO issue and organic doesn't mean without persticides or herbicides. I think it' safer to buy local and seasonal.

Thank you for the list. And here I thought I was safe with snap peas. It's gotten to the point I do most of my green grocer shopping at the Food Co-op or at Farmer's Markets in the Capital Region.

I'm shocked mushrooms didn't make the first list. We are big produce buyers. Some of the produce I purchase is labeled pre-washed. I wonder how that affects the list.

'cept for the Sweet Peas, the Bell Peppers and Snap peas, all items listed make it on my list from time to time.
