Just Kidding

Categories
Lifestyle

Whenever someone takes a shot at me and then excuses his or herself by saying " I was just kidding", I respond immediately that my father taught me that nothing is ever said in jest.

One must learn that there's always a germ of truth in that "joke"or jest
and it is that germ of truth that must concern one's self and must be paid attention to.

Words to the wise!

Having posited this absolute verity, I must explain that I am the exception to the rule because I have a left-handed person's sense of humor which is often misunderstood.

...but is it that germ of truth that makes it funny?

...then there must still be a germ of truth.

OMG! My dad used to say the same thing, word for word. The more you write about your father, the more he sounds like mine.

Being a fellow lefty, I know what you mean about humor that is misunderstood.

You said that to me once, I never forgot it! You were right.

I see humor as a way to make a point; perhaps not as bitingly; sometimes so; I enjoy using in commentary when I need to disparage bad policy (or politics or messaging -- often all exist in some sort of combination). When done well it takes the subject of the humor off his/her game. Other times I like to employ it to lighten a mood.
As to being subject of shots, being such can be a nice badge of honor depending on the context and/ or the shooter, or both.
I agree with Fred's dad, either intentional or with not much thought (the latter a more tasteful choice of words since the the potential universe of readers of this blog and comments thereto may very well be without limit).

So then, we agree that "nothing is said in jest" is not always true.

Oy Vey, I think much of the above sounds like "mishagas"-. As a Midwesterner, we say what we mean and mean what we say and let the chips fall where they may. Inter-twining humor with perceptive and constructive (not mean) feedback can be very enlightening, engaging and beneficial in the right situation. What is 'Truth" anyway?
