A Leader Among Men

Michael Sam is about to set foot on untrodden ground.  He is a top player heading into the NFL draft and just announced to the world that he is gay.  Almost certain to get drafted, Sam showed an incredible amount of courage by making his announcement just before he heads into the draft.

One could certainly make the case that he hurt his his career and earning capacity by announcing this before the draft as opposed to after he was selected by a team.  Then again, perhaps the piece of mind of going to a team that is mentally and emotionally prepared to meet what will certainly be an incredible challenge is worth whatever financial depreciation he might suffer.

There is a lot of talk about whther or not the NFL is homophobic and will accept Sam into it's community.  I think that players are from a younger generation and less likely to hate than older folk.  I think the media distraction will be the greatest issue.

Thoughts?

Alan & I have friends who are a gay couple - going to dinner with them is the same as any hetero couple - I talk electronics with one of them and talk shoes with the other - Riva Schwartz (apparently signed in as Alan)

Jon Stewart made an excellent point the other night, that the NFL seems to have less of an issue with felons, drunk drivers, dog fighters, murderers and other assorted miscreants, than they do with a gay player (as if Michael Sam is the first or the only current gay NFL'er?). Furthermore, there is an interesting phenomenon with many, many straight guys, who upon learning that someone they know is gay, simply assume that the gay guy is now lusting after them. Bottom line is that time will resolve this, as it has in the military. After all, for decades LGBT's were excluded from the military due to concerns that their presence would somehow harm morale (precisely the same reasoning that maintained racial segregation in the military for so long). There will come a point that we all look back and ask ourselves what was the issue?

Media distraction is a constant in the NFL, the Patriots this year dealt with Tim Tebow signing, A TE who was charged in a murder case, and a QB screaming at his teamates on the sideline. They went 12-4 and to the AFC Championship team. This will be a story for 4-5 weeks, and will die down. I think it will be great for some of the ignorant players in the league, as well as people at home to see that a gay man, can not only hold his own, but play at a very high level in the most "manly" sport of all.

Disagree that media is a constant. A constant means that something is the same no matter what. The Patriots successful season was a result of them managing the media at an elite level. We saw the Jets the season before managing even just the Tebow situation poorly. There will be many teams that will pass on Sam for this reason alone. That is more of a reason he will drop in the draft than because of any homophobia or hatred. Dropping in the draft would certainly cost him money. You were also wrong in that clearly hockey is clearly a more manly sport than football ;)

A wonderful example and lesson in tolerance and courage and for youth troubled by their sexuality when it is not mainstream; a good indication of the movement in this country towards greater tolerance; and how wonderful for Michael Sam - when he gains acceptance and admiration it is with full knowledge of who he is. Must be such a load off his shoulders.

From what I have heard the young man has strong character and the Jets Sheldon Richardson, a former rookie, vouches for him. Real issue may be will his prowess on the field ultimately overshadow his identity of his sexual preference.
