Explosive Super Bowl

Categories
Music

I have always had a penchant for disliking pop music.  When I was in high school, the most popular music was "New Wave", as distasteful a genre of music that has ever existed.  It brought on the advent of electronically produced music. which has led to all sorts of bad things in musical history, including the distinct decline in aggregate musical talent.

One of the few bright spots in this last Super Bowl (outside of those like me who won money from their boxes) was the breakthrough performance of Bruno Mars at halftime.  I knew about Bruno Mars prior to last Sunday.  I knew he was extremely talented, but I had never really seen him perform live.  My daughter told me that he has only released two albums.  Considering his widespread popularity, it sounds like he is only just getting started.

I think what is thoroughly enjoyable is not just his apparent 'Motown' allegiance, but the true talent that overflows as he juggles different musical styles all while performing at the highest lever possible.  The sky really is the limit for this kid and unlike many Super Bowl performances, we may look back at Sunday evening as the launching point for his super stardom.

And he channels Elvis! Or is it James Brown? He can do it all!

I was one of those people who was initially disappointed when I heard Bruno Mars would be performing at halftime. I believe my words were, "It's in NJ, why can't Bon Jovi or Bruce perform?" I have to confess, I was very pleasantly surprised at how much I enjoyed his performance.

Rick wrote Bruno looks real nice and sweet but I found the lyrics erotic and suggestive. Bottom line he is a great performer for a football audience but not for me.

Not as good as chili peppers but at least he keeps his shirt on. Seriously, young james brown, mj.

Bruno appears to be one of the many singers who does not sound even as close to as good live as he does on "record". He was thoroughly unimpressive. I sang his song "Amazing" this summer at a wedding and I think I sounded better, although I could not do a split and grab my crotch ala MJ or Prince like Bruno does.

He did not lip synch, because he would have sounded a lot better. YOu can also tell because he cut out half of "Amazing"

Bruno was much better than the actual game!

Bruno Mars very much follows Prince in terms influences. I am not that familiar with his material and not much my cup of tea. Top forty radio, since probably the early 70s included very little that makes my collection. As to new wave, since Erik attacked it, one of my fave later bands, Squeeze, is considered new wave and its song-writing team, Chris Difford and Glenn Tilbrook, endured Lennon-McCartney comparisons, particularly in their home UK where they put out hit after hit. Most know their hit Tempted (with Paul Carrack who sings on Ace's How Long on lead vocal; Glenn sings lead in concert).
