It's All About the Sides

For me, Thanksgiving is all about the side dishes. It’s also about the frame of the turkey but that’s a blog for another day.

We generally host Thanksgiving and serve “traditional” side dishes. For us, that includes sweet potato casserole, with the melted marshmallows, a string bean casserole, with the Durkee fried onions, my husband's stuffing which is cooked in a separate pan and not in the turkey, and macaroni and cheese with toasted breadcrumbs. We do usually add a vegetable, such as broccoli, to convince ourselves that we are actually serving a healthy meal.

For my husband and his brother, the table is not complete unless there is a bowl containing Ocean Spray cranberry sauce that has come out of the can in one large single piece which has the rings of the can pressed into it. You know what I'm talking about. . .

I am not a fan of cranberry sauce so you will never see that on my plate. But you will see every other side dish on my plate. There will also be a small piece of turkey on my plate. Because, after all, it is Thanksgiving.

What will be on your plate on Thursday?

Stuffing, potatoes, gravy and dark meat...

I love it all. Wife is not a Turkey fan, but last year we tried frying one at our neighbors frier and she liked it. So this year, I got her one for us to use. Electric and outside of course. Looking forward to it and the the sides.

I have a smoker. We were considering smoking this year since we're a small group and it's a small bird. But the NY weather won't be cooperating with that plan. . .

Your table sounds like my table - except we'll add twice baked potatoes and add cauliflower and brussels sprouts as the veggies. Happy Thanksgiving, everyone.

Can we come for thanksgiving to your house? This year we are not even having Turkey!
