Prequels and Sequels

Entertainment, to me, has recently been dominated by an onslaught of prequels and sequels. “Young Sheldon,” the prequel to “The Big Bang Theory,” just ended it’s run. There is currently, “And Just Like That,” the sequel to “Sex and The City,” and “The House of Dragons,” the prequel to “Game of Thrones.”

While the prequel/sequel phenomena seems prevalent in current entertainment to me, it goes back to 1968 and the four sequels of “Planet of the Apes.”  Although there could be a debate as to whether “Escape From the Planet of the Apes,” is actually a sequel or a prequel.

In my time I have watched a lot of sequels and prequels. I am currently watching “And Just Like That,” as well as “The House of Dragons.”  Personally, I find that I enjoy the sequels a bit more. There is a comfort in knowing who the characters are and seeing how they developed from the original to the sequel. I also do not know where they are going in their new stories.

With respect to prequels, I may be introduced to new characters but I, essentially, know where they are going to be at the end of the story.  For me, that takes a bit of fun out of the entertainment. For example, I thoroughly enjoyed watching the original Star Wars trilogy (episodes 4, 5, and 6) more than I enjoyed the subsequent prequels (episodes 1, 2, and 3) because I knew, no matter how the story evolved, who Anakin Skywalker was going to evolve into.  I am having the same experience with "The House of Dragons." While I am enjoying these new characters, I essentially know how their stories will end.  And, again, it lessens the experience a bit for me.

Is it just me?  Can you make the case for a good prequel?

To me it is all derivative and not original...

Young Sheldon shouldn’t have even been attempted…was my thinking. I was SO wrong. LOVE that show. Little Missy Cooper is one of my all time favorite tv characters. Like a real life Lisa Simpson.

Same with the role Annie Potts played so well.

My favorite Star Wars movie is Phantom Menace, a prequel on the rise of Anakin Skywalker
Victoria Drogin

I enjoy both if done well. I didn’t like HOD season one as much as this season. Like Corey, we are looking forward. Don’t get me started on Star Wars. lol
