One day

Last Thursday was a fascinating day. In the morning I attended a bris. My friend became a Grandpa and it was a happy joyous celebration with a beautiful buffet. Lots of smiling people. Although it was a little strange that people were videoing the act on their iPhones. Why anyone would want to see that again is beyond me. I also think that when the boy gets older, he won't want to see that either.

At the end of the day, I attended a wake. A different friend lost his Mother after 91 years of life. Lots of people dressed in black. The occassion was solemn and filled with stories of her life. No one was taking videos on their iPhone though.

From begining to end was life itself. A new life and a life that has completed its' journey. In between, for me, was life's daily ups and downs. Some laughs, some stress and, fortunately, satisfaction in completing some tasks. Quite a day.

Have you had an experience like that?

My whole thing these days is to try to slow things (and time) down and be in the moment--cherish it!

As my youngest goes off to college this week I feel like I'm starting a new life- it's all so bittersweet as we want our kids to be independent but we don't want to part with them at the same time- I think I will join FK's mindset and live in the NOW and cherish the moment.

There have been two weddings with two more to go including my niece (a few gothamites met the groom when brought David to Israeloff Legal). The losses involved two good guys I have worked with; one on my signature success outside government; the other on what I anticipated as a real electoral surprise (until the candidate opted out). The wake and funeral for Walter McCaffrey a former NYC councilman also was like reunion since some there I did not see since the heyday of the fight v Congestion Pricing or longer. Interestingly, at the Bill Lynch service more of the people I saw I had at minimum been in touch with more frequently - more of them remain in the "game"; a cute tidbit, mayor Dinkins recalled how often folks would complain that bill did not return their calls; Bill the mayor recalled said "I know what they want" - I always heard that; but whenever I worked with him, he always called back; my friend Tony told me to take that as a compliment.
Bottom celebrate from its coming and going.
