Oblivion

There he was. Oblivious to the world around him.  A pair of noise cancelling headphones perched comfortably around his head.  A little quiet singing?  Perhaps.

Just to his left, a woman walked quietly oblivious to the world around her.  No headphones but a smartphone would suffice.  A very serious conversation clearly in full swing.

Behind her, the double suit.  Two men walking together to the same destination (not sure how I could really discern that fact but I am confident) but oblivious to each other.  Not oblivious, however, to their blackberry devices.  Two sets of thumbs were moving so quickly they were just a blur. Kind of looked like one thumb.

As I watched this scene, I worried about each of them crashing into each other or something even more dangerous.  Just another morning on Madison Avenue . . .

I had a similar experience at the ball field watching a little league game. Saw a bunch of kids playing on the swings. Some of the kids were video taping each other from different angles on the swings. Some other girls were just walking up and down the bleachers in a straight line, each looking at their phones while they were walking (marching?).

Many think that technology is changing everything, but often the more things change, the more they stay the same.

Texting while walking is a variation of Jay Walking.

People crashed into each other pre-smartphones and pre-any phones. Anywhere here of defensive strolling? It can be an art form especially when you rush.

Next time say "hello". It really surprises people when you do. LOL

get nervous when I see people walking in the city chatting or texting on their phone. Too many times have I seen people just walking into the cross walk without looking.

Never mind the smart devices, my pet peeve is people looking to the side and walking forward oblivious to the fact that there are others walking on the same sidewalk. And not to sound sexist, but an awfully high proportion of these offenders are late-teens, early-twenties young women...
