Cashless

It was a small innocuous message in a plastic stand on the restaurant table. It could have easily been confused with an invitation to try the breakfast special.
But the message was different. It informed the patron that the restaurant was “cashless”. No further explanation…. just information.
I have mixed feelings about cashless.
On the one hand, it probably doesn’t impact me personally —unless they don’t accept the credit card that I happen to have in my wallet.
On the other hand, I am sensitive to the points raised that “cashless” deprives people who, for any number of reasons, don’t carry (or have) credit cards.
I remember when two dollar bills and dollar coins were in circulation. Merchants were often reluctant to accept them. I remember reminding the reluctant merchant that the currency was “legal tender for all debts, public and private.”

Earlier this week, Rona blogged about keys becoming a thing of the past. Is cash following keys to become our next endangered species?

I haven't run into anywhere, restaurant or otherwise, that no longer takes cash; but do see evidence of things moving that way. We rarely pay with cash anymore and check to make sure we have some on the chance we need it.

Wow! We just were talking about this last night. How strange things have become...

My experience is that oft times I patronize places which only take cash. Up is down and down is up.

I’ve seen both recently-no cash or cash only. Either way it’s limiting to patrons. Have you seen the new subway payment- where it’s your phone for payment?

Cash will be obsolete in less than 10 years in the US. The government wants to do away with it because of tax evasion, funding terrorism, organized crime, etc. Once they (the government) start talking about it, it will happen quickly. $100 bills will be the first to go.

My children have only used things like Venmo instead of cash for quite a while now.
Unfortunately my daughter learned the hard way what I’ve been preaching for years -to always make sure you have cash hidden in your wallet, she had to meet a client and all of the parking garages where she was accepted only cash which she did not have.
I just read an article addressing cashless stores which indicates that Massachusetts and New Jersey have banned them, and suggesting that several major cities are in the process of doing the same.

Cash is also expensive to produce. Another reason the government may want to do away with it. I like having both options.

As a "fan" of "The Handmaid's Tale," one of the ways the government took away women's rights were by taking away their funds (via computer). Cash protects against something like that. I agree with Dan...I like having both options!

As a banker, I am hearing more and more retail business owners tell me that they get very little cash anymore. From the Dunkin' Donuts to bigger ticket item stores, they don't need cash on hand and do not have customers wanting to pay cash anymore. Think about it, how many of you went to Starbucks today and paid cash? I will bet most of you have the app on your phone.

I do not use cash for the most part other than to tip.
There was legislation passed in NY to bar cashless establishments.
Interestingly when my son lived in Williamsburg he said the places that did not accept plastic aka cash only were the first to close.

I still use cash on occasion and I make sure I carry some. I still like the feel of a bill. Old school....trying to get used to paying with my phone. Its an Adjustment.
