Do you have the courage

So a very good friend couldn't tell me the truth the other day. He was not courageous and did not handle himself well. I totally empathize with him and understand his business decisions. However, the way it was told to me (through other people) actually hurt more and left me wondering...

Do you tell the truth to your friends or do you avoid it using the excuse that you are protecting their feelings.

I have been guilty of the latter and try very hard to continually tell my close friends and family the truth...whether it will it'll be painful or not. They need to hear it even if it relates to business and networking.

Are you referrable? Are you losing business to competition without knowing why?

Not easy questions to answer. Depends on situation and relationship. We have all taken he easy way out with a white lie or fib...

What a great topic, Mitch. I'm a big truth teller and expect the same in return. I used to skate around the truth to lessen the blow, but I've found it never works out well for the relationship. I hate being lied to and have a very hard time moving past lies. They break relationships and the lasting effects are sometimes worse than the truth. When I need to speak the truth, I think to myself..."does this need to be said? does this need to be said by me?, does this need to be said right now?" If the answer is yes to all three, then I say the truth.

If my telling the truth would be helpful, I'll do so...gently, if possible. If not, then I don't. People often tell others the truth, when it's really only their opinion. Opinions are sometimes best kept to ourselves. I dislike being lied to. Once that trust is broken, it's almost impossible to come back from. I would not want to ruin a relationship by lying or avoiding speaking the truth.

Learning the difference between opinion and truth is a good life lesson.
