Benches

In the sports world, being benched is not a good thing as you are taken off the playing field and assigned to “riding the pine” and hopefully motivated to think “Put me in Coach I’m ready to play!”

However, in real life, a lot can go on while one is sitting on a bench (even, I suppose, in sports).

The BenchAs pictured, the center of Key West society sits at a bench across from the prime live rock and roll venue Green Parrot Bar on Friday nights at 5:30 for “Sound Check”.

For those that have experienced it I need say no more, as they have indulged in the nourishing experience, as a virtual cross section of Key West society lounges on or passes by the bench.

I have met and made good friends sitting on the bench (it is outside the Courthouse Deli and is called the Courthouse Deli Bench and it even has a Facebook page).

There is also a bench outside the 5 Brothers Deli I get our con leche every early morning.  There the regulars take their bench seats in the predawn darkness outside the Deli.  I hear them laughing, opinionating and loudly arguing as I enter and exit with our coffee.  I have not yet infiltrated their society yet, but I have made acquaintance with one of them and I have aspirations.

Then there are park benches (Corey has a song) appropriate for many things including secret spy drops and court benches from which issue important legal rulings.

Have you been benched or know any seats of power?

And there’s the “Men’s Bench” outside of stores where men wait patiently while others shop.

Actually, BENCHING usually occurs after an orthodox wedding. A great way to get overtime for the band

I'm sure there are some around the city; though probably not occupied just at the moment. Maybe when the weather gets warmer?

Fred, excellent job on this one! Great insight on the "benches of life". Grand perspective, truly. At present, I sit in the middle of the great bench in the board room. I prefer the middle to the end. Puts me in the thick of the conversation. I love the action.

Great concept I love sitting on the bench at Sea Cliff Beach —but that is more of a solitary bench where your interactions are with those walking along the boardwalk.

Great blog! To me, a bench, unlike a chair, carries an implicit invitation for company. I do have a favorite bench in Central Park and one in Riverside.

The most important thing about your bench is community- so lovely and so important.

Great bench, great scene, great music...I've been fortunate to have had the experience :-)

My power 'seat" was riding with the Traveling Wilburys of Gotham. Literally the back seat...
Thankfully with good company.

Love this. And love what Shelley said. A bench carries the implicit invitation for company. Maybe that’s why I’ve always loved benches more than chairs. And we were fortunate to share your KW bench experience, as well. So much fun! give love to Guy and the crew.

The “ Bench “ can take on many forms . In all cases it is the great equalizer . Everybody gets cut down to size . Nobody is special . Oh yeah once in a while a celebrity might drop in but their star power is diminished exponentially by the regular patrons . The right “ mix” is essential for the quintessential “ bench” experience . It’s important that no one stand out . I.E. the heart surgeon who just hours or even minutes before cracked open a chest can disguise his “ Red Stripe “ in a brown paper bag and ruminate about anything that strikes his fancy . No one judges and a few might care . It’s a place to expound . A place to smoke a cigar or not . You have everybody’s attention or nobody’s . My bench takes the form of an old tattered couch in the back of a renowned butcher shop in the mountains . Sitting in the middle of hanging sides of beef , consorting with known felons and biker gang members . Passing a bottle of fine whiskey back and forth and discussing every subject known to man . If you are present you are accounted for . Dogs are welcome . Bones are plentiful . Lynyrd Skynyrd in the background . Every body needs a “ bench” in their lives . Essential stuff .

Paul and I should come to your intriguing bench.

Still think of that crazy Ian Anderson character when I hear the "....park bench" phrase.

Funny thing when I worked in the Bronx, there was the Courthouse Deli across the street. It might've closed. Haven't been by to check. Anyone who goes to a Yankee game later this year can check and report back.
