Happy Birthday to The Sopranos

Spoiler Alert-If you are one of the very few people who do not know how "The Sopranos" ended, and you do not want to know, do not read this blog.

I cannot believe that it has been twenty years since “The Sopranos” first aired. I admittedly only watched the first episode because my Mother told me to. One of the producers of The Sopranos-Brad Grey-was a close friend of my family. I originally checked out the show at my Mother’s request, to see what Brad was up to. I did not expect to immediately get hooked on the show and watch it faithfully every Sunday night.

One fact that speaks so much as to what an incredible show it was is that people, me included, still talk abut the final scene and what it meant. In the final scene that aired June 10, 2007, the Soprano family gathers at a diner while Journey's   "Don't Stop Believin"  plays. When Tony Soprano looks up as his daughter Meadow arrives, the screen goes black before the credits start rolling. The audience was left debating what had happened, including whether Tony Soprano had died.

I’ll never forget my reaction when the screen went black. I jumped and yelled at my husband, “What happened to the tv??” It took a while for me to realize that the black screen was intentional. I, like so many others were left to wonder what it meant. I even tried to use my connections to find out, I had my Mom call Brad’s mom. But the response that came back was, “it means whatever you thought it meant.” Ugh!!!

Were you a Sopranos fan? If so, what did the ending mean to you?

It definitely left room for a spin off...which never happened of course. Cruel to the loyal fans, but quite effective as we are talking about it twenty years later.

I was one of the few who did not watch (for myriad reasons). My daughter did however and I recall her yelling at the end of the last episode, also believed her tv crashed.
NPR recently did an interview about the Sopranos and apparently there is a movie in the works---a prequel. The writer also indicated that the ending was intended to leave it to viewers' imaginations saying life is not that clear cut.

Most people agree that he died. But there are a few who differ on that.

Kinda like Who Shot J R Ewing? Only that show had more seasons.
LOL when the screen went to black on the last show for the Sopranos, it was water cooler talk that ensued.

Don't stop believing...that the story will continue :-)

it was talked a lot about in my last job in gov't. I never watched faithfully. If my son watched and I was in the same space I watched.
