Are We Doing The Right Thing

It was a simple proposition that I generated from a variety of thoughts.

Part of it came from the repeated Rutgers "scandals".  Part of it came from conversations I've had with my sister who is both a teacher and a mother of a special needs child.  Part of it was conceived throughout Memorial Day weekend as I watched episodes of MASH, a special on D-Day and the first half hour or so of Saving Private Ryan.  Part of it came from my long time argument about the selling of sex and violence to our children.

"Do you notice how as a society, so many people go overboard defending their kids from their teachers and coaches, yet we feel young and hip as we equally defend the sex, debauchery and gratuitous violence the kids are inundated with every day."

We don't have winners or losers anymore, but we do have rampant rates of suicide, PTSD, drug abuse, bullying, cutting, obsessive compulsive, eating disorders, bipolar disorders, etc.  People talk about some people who are resistant to change.  Is there ever a point where we recognize that things have changed but its not good.

I heard this morning that Anthony Weiner is only 5 points behind in the polls and I was just thinking about how much we've lowered our standards as a society when a pervert like him is now a serious candidate for mayor of the most important city in our country. I had the same thought when I heard the former South Carolina governer was elected to Congress. I wonder how Gary Hart feels?

(noticed Vincent left our the next "first man" and former president--guess who, and every philanderer who occupied or sought to occupy the White House).
Erik is correct to state we need to focus on all things that might cause abuse, not all of it direct physical and/ or verbal. Plain and simple. Do not condone bad behaviors; sanction illegal ones.

I think you have such a valid point about parents who want to be friends with their kids and not parents. My daughter had a friend whom threw up on the school principal at Homecoming because she was so drunk. The Mother's defense, "She was on Benadryl." Then, at the post prom party our town hosts-which is a dry party-the kid was not allowed in because she was drunk. The Mom's defense, "She was not drunk, just exhausted, it was 2:00 a.m." Four years late, the kid, who's now an adult, is a mess. We don't do our kids any favors when we defend or make excuses for their wrong behavior.

...then again, it could be worse. In Belarus, they have an epidemic of beavers attacking people...and they found a rat on Mars.
