The Rating Phenomenon

My daughter and I were having a conversation the other day about college professors. I was kind of astounded by the process she was describing in choosing a course to take.

She was explaining to me that part of choosing a class is vetting the professor. For most professors, there is information available on professor rating websites to see student experience.

It’s a new world.

You know how I feel about internet rating systems. Generally people who have a gripe are those that write.

My son developed a fair system during his time at Queens college. I do not know if it remains in place

Internet rating systems for faculty members is not new. There have always been rating systems available although I forgot what the old ones were. I do not agree with Rona; I write positive reviews for restaurants and places I have enjoyed. I have an old friend who teaches at a University in NJ. He is tenured. His reviews are lousy, but at least students know what they are signing up for. I love writing reviews on Trip Advisor.

We are circling the drain folks . Strap in . Choosing your college professor based on what ? Your intellectually vacant point of view or more unlikely someone who will challenge your beliefs ? I think not . College campus has now become Group Think University. Free speech and originality is gone . Now one gets to choose a professor that what ? Supports your ideology ? Or challenges it ? I prefer the latter . I wonder what the students prefer ? I prefer 2 years of mandatory service to your country as an admission requirement . No exceptions .

There is nothing worse then taking a class with an inept professor....there are many and I have had a few. I teach - a class or two a semester - students are constantly rating professors...in fact I hear them discussing other professors amongst themselves all the time.

Also most school now have a system where students will evaluate the professor at the end of the semester. As a professor you are required (at least at my school) to read the evaluations. I have to say it can be a challenge - but it has its benefits as if you read them carefully it can help you to improve your teaching style.
