The comeback

It's been over 2 years since my life was saved by Dr. Grieco at Glen Cove hospital and I've been given the green light to exercise again. However, I'm only allowed to walk and use very light weights.

In my life, exercising meant working out to total exhaustion whether it was pounding heavy weights or playing sports. Not anymore and it's been difficult for me to adapt because I used exercise as a way of clearing my mind.

Now I push myself to make it around an 18 hole golf course. And when I do, my body is sore for two days.

I am trying to take the long view which reminds me of a story. About 20 years ago while walking my children to school (One of my favorite things) one of them, not sure which, asked me about an unusually overweight  person who rode by us on their bicycle. The question..."How did they get that way?" I answered, one extra doughnut a day.

So...I'm trying to take one extra step a day and "eat one less doughnut."

About 3 years ago my doc gave me the simplest formula imaginable for dropping some weight and keeping it off. He looked at my height and build and told me about how many calories I needed per day to be at a healthy weight. He said, "Cut out 1,000 calories a day, you'll drop about 1 pound or two a week, and if you stick to that you'll level off at a healthy weight and stay there. Within months, I went from hovering between 195-200 lbs to hovering between 185-190 and I've stayed there ever since. One less doughnut indeed!

Great news! May I suggest walking outside and really becoming aware of your surroundings. For me I’ll look for a particular color, Car, tree, how many people wear hats, etc. it makes the walk interesting and keeps me present even while listening to music. Soon you’ll be walking marathons and can Fred say he’a Done that? LOL

Happy anniversary!!! I've been a Weight Watcher since I'm 17. No matter how often their diet has changed the core concept has always essentially been the same, one day at a time. It has to be a slow process to be sustained.

You and Jerry can commiserate. You should have seen the look on his face when the docs in rehab told him he couldn't use more than 1lb weights. He's now worked up to 3lb weights and still makes a face when I don't hand him heavier ones.

Think about when you could not exercise at allm and enjoy every step you take and every poiund you can lift! As to the "doughnuts," how about none a day and take an extra step! I empathize comepletely.
