Cheap places to live

Kiplinger magazine compiled the 10 cheapest places to live in the US and guess what? None of them were in the Northeast! It's no surprise that they are all in the South and South west. Here they are...

1. Harlingen, Texas

2. Memphis, Tenn.

3. McAllen, Texas

4. Fayetteville, Ark.

5. Temple, Texas

6. Conway, Ark.

7. Pueblo, Colo.

8. Wichita Falls, Texas

9. Springfield, Ill.

10. Winston-Salem, N.C.

I guess if I was looking for an inexpensive house to live in I could go to Harlingen, Texas and buy one for about $200k. Although it would be a helluva commmute back to New York.  I could go to McAllen, Texas to buy my groceries, grocery prices are among the lowest in the country. If I was looking for a job I would go to Fayetville, Ark they have the lowest unemployment rate probably because Wal-Mart's headquarters is nearby.

Would you want to live in any of these cities?

I have a lot of friends whom have moved to North Carolina. A friend of mine in Charlotte is constantly meeting New York transplants. And while the beautiful home she has there cost them a lot less than in would in NY, she does remind me that they earn a lot less there.

The federal government gets it right; it provides pay differentials based on the cost of living.
I prefer NYC, and where I opt to live within this city.

Most of these places are inexpensive to live in because you cannot make any real money there. What upscale professional would like to live in an area where almost everyone is economically challenged? No big fee litigation, estate planning, tax planning, cosmetic dentistry, and/or other upscale type services because no one can afford them.
