First Day of School

I am writing on Monday so – it’s tomorrow. Really, by the time this posts the new school year will have already begun, at least in my town.

I personally haven’t had a first day of school in more years than I will admit, but I remember that feeling. Excited about seeing friends and wearing new clothes. Anxiously looking forward to breaking the binder on a new composition notebook. Great new pens. To this day, I get a charge out of great new pens.

And, of course, that excitement always kept me awake. As hard as I tried to make sure to get a good night’s sleep to start off the school year, that never happened.

In my house, it’s our last start of a school year – at least one that isn’t college – and we’re all awake. The school bag is packed, alarms are set, and a new school year is about to begin.

What do you remember about starting the school year?

Interesting as I really do not have starting memories. I do recall upset at needing to attend school earlier in 8th grade -- I generally protested and did not arrive early as required except on test dates; teacher wanted to fail me but I scored 100 on the Regents test (as I did on just about every other test she gave that year). It was more about summer ending and missing the freedom and all.

My daughter, 3 years old, starts school this week - her first day of school ever. I'm sure I will remember this more than any of my first days at school.

I remember the excitement of seeing friends again and wondering who our teacher would be (we did not get early notification as I do now in LI). It was rarely a good feeling though as I hatted to read and knew books and homework were about to begin once again. It was better in HS when it was more about getting back to the grove of seeing friends daily.
