Your Turn

Jury, Court, New York,

"Your Turn," that is the name of the 10 min film you are encouraged to watch if you are chosen to be in the Jury select pool in New York State.

It promotes the idea that you are doing a great service and the trials will be "fascinating."

I'll leave it up to our litigating Gothamites to answer that one.

For $40 a day, if you are not being paid be an employer.

My Dad, 25 years ago in Gwinett County, GA, received $75 per day.

Today is Day 1 and we shall see what happens. I have been given much solicited and unsolicited advice about getting out of Jury service. I am a solopreneur, so its not helping my fiscal state being here. However, I believe our justice system certainly needs conscious, self supporting, enlightened people serving on juries. So I'm conflicted. Mostly, I'm a "put your own oxygen mask first" kind of person, but I'm still feeling a spiritual obligation.

More will be revealed.

I was in the pool about two summers ago. I know the D.A. and I know the Judge. No way I can be selected. Had to wait two days before my name got called and then I was ruled out of consideration. The video made me think of a lovely song which title starts with the words of the video followed by "Now." I just enjoyed playing it (I even have it on vinyl) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DFkMIkcI_lE

It seems like you have too much experience to be a juror. Kind of bad logic for our justice system. I'd have you on my jury.
And love JD.

As one who has tried a few jury trials-before I was a matrimonial litigator (there are generally no juries in divorce cases)-I find your conflict admirable. Most people who are suffering financially from being there just make up answers they think the lawyers don't want to hear to be excused.

I have served multiple times and have received so many ideas on how to get out. But once there, I am honest and usually get on a case. It is our duty after all, living in a free country, so just go with the flow.

Cayce, given all I have learned, I must say I am very pleased that the fate of someone, or some entity, is partially in your hands---although I recognize the difficulties you face as a juror. Please do an after blog on your experience (to the degree allowed).
