On Friday, I had the occasion to take the Long Island Rail Road into Manhattan for a court appearance. Sometimes, while on the train, I enjoy just sitting in my seat, looking out the windows, and just watching the world go by. You never know what you might see.

On Friday, the view was particularly beautiful. The ice-which had been so difficult to navigate during the previous days’ commute-created a beautiful sheen on the snow. From my seat on the train, I felt that I was truly watching a winter wonderland.

As I turned my attention back into the train car, I looked around. Everyone in the train car, except for myself and one other person, had their attention focused on their cell phones. Only one other person was enjoying the show that Mother Nature was putting on right outside our train.

Everywhere you go lately, people are all focused on their phones. Are we starting to lose the ability to focus on and appreciate all that is happening beyond that small screen?
