Watching the World Go By

Categories

On Friday, I had the occasion to take the Long Island Rail Road into Manhattan for a court appearance. Sometimes, while on the train, I enjoy just sitting in my seat, looking out the windows, and just watching the world go by. You never know what you might see.

On Friday, the view was particularly beautiful. The ice-which had been so difficult to navigate during the previous days’ commute-created a beautiful sheen on the snow. From my seat on the train, I felt that I was truly watching a winter wonderland.

As I turned my attention back into the train car, I looked around. Everyone in the train car, except for myself and one other person, had their attention focused on their cell phones. Only one other person was enjoying the show that Mother Nature was putting on right outside our train.

Everywhere you go lately, people are all focused on their phones. Are we starting to lose the ability to focus on and appreciate all that is happening beyond that small screen?

I enjoyed that experienced on a train ride to Boston -- even though there were moments at the Mac.

It is addictive and there has been a seismic shift with good and bad consequences, but there is no going back.

Great blog! I drive a lot. I like pointing out beautiful, natural things to whoever is driving with me. Waterfalls, mountains, hawks, clouds… You have to take time to smell the roses.

Is interesting that our Rabbi's weekly blog was similarly focused. It is an addiction. One that makes us miss so much of the world around us and so many interactions with those around us. I wonder how much better your court appearance was that morning after a ride that allowed you to destress and to focus on the beauty around you.

It's a tool and people are free to use however serves them. I like to see the trees and the feed, myself.

This is the shift that is normal. The worst part, we are loosing our ability to have face to face conversations. I watch my 21 year old step-daughter with her friend, both heads down, both silent sitting next to each other, face planted in their phones. Once in a while they will share a video, even while eating, the phone is never off. Not my thing. There is a place for your phone and it is a powerful tool, but it should never take over interpersonal time or family gatherings.
Like Paul, I love pointing out a beautiful natural views when driving.

You are very correct. I went into the city a few weeks ago in February when we were having a snowstorm. It was a really beautiful ride. But, I take the LIRR everyday and it does get kind of ordinary after a while.
